How The Test Was Won
Well first of all: The Simpsons have a new intro, instead of the “glow stick” that Homer chucks out of the window bouncing on the street, Otto sucks it up, then the end seqence when both cars arrive and Homer gets slammed into the door is longer with the Simpsons family performing a “mini story” every episode. This time it is about different times and series. This episode, “how the test was won” is all about Springfield Elementary – a new school year is about to kick-off and federal funds are to be distributed which is why a federal test is being prepared for. To get better results, Principal Skinner’s superior sacks all the usual suspects (Bart and the rowdie crew along Nelson and Wiggum’s stupid boy). They go on a fun journey and learn that school “outside school” is quite interesting. Homer in the meantime had forgotten to mail in his insurance letter and freaks out when he realizes that “he is know responsible for his own actions” – quite hilarious to see what happened to him in the past (ouch)…

Maybe people loved my link collections (have many links at one place), so I believe it makes sense to continue:

Download: Part 1 (100MB) / Part 2 (80MB) / rapidshare.com

As always I do not know how long these links are accessible nor will I provide an alternative download. I merely index what I find on the net. Take what you can or look for yourself and share those links!

“I Don’t Wanna Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is the 4th episode of The Simpsons’ nineteenth season, and first aired on October 14, 2007, although it was originally scheduled to air on September 30, 2007. It was written by Dana Gould and directed by Bob Anderson. It guest stars Steve Buscemi as Dwight, Ted Nugent as himself and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who reprises her role as Snake’s girlfriend Gloria for the first time since the episode “A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love”.

Plot

Lisa is named “Student of the Millennium”, so Marge stresses that Homer has to attend her ceremony due to past absences at most of the kids’ events. Homer then wakes up early and takes Maggie to the school auditorium. Meanwhile, Marge is waiting in line at the bank, and gets impatient after the line doesn’t move, so she strikes up a conversation with an apparent charming man named Dwight. He later takes out his pistol and holds up the bank. Gil Gunderson then arrives, prepared for his new job as a security guard, however he is repeatedly shot by Dwight’s accomplice and is apparently killed.

Homer is smugly waiting for Marge at the ceremony. Marge privately calls Homer, informing him she’s a hostage at a bank robbery. Dwight notices Marge on the phone. Dwight makes a compromise; he will promise to turn himself in as long as Marge promises to visit him in prison, to which she reluctantly agrees.

A nervous Marge returns home. Homer attempts to convince Marge not to visit Dwight in the prison, but Marge wishes to honor her promise and visit him. However, while going to the prison, she makes continuous stops to avoid going to the prison, and misses visiting hours. At the prison, Dwight expectantly waits for Marge. While watching Snake Jailbird and his girlfriend, Gloria, Dwight becomes depressed. Dwight becomes angry, and Marge’s guilt begins to get to her while watching a frightening horror movie about a prisoner who was to be electrocuted. At the same moment, Dwight is breaking out of Springfield Penitentiary. He finds Marge’s address in a newspaper, and sets out to find her.

At home, while watching TV, Kent Brockman makes a news report on “Dwight David Diddlehopper’s” escape from prison. Dwight begins stalking Marge in various places, and successfully catches up to Marge and keeps her as his hostage. Dwight takes her to the same amusement park where he was abandoned by his mother, with the intention to have Marge help him repay the time he had lost, and promises to let her go afterwards, to which Marge, out of sympathy, agrees. He and Marge then ride the Viking ship ride together. Chief Wiggum arrives attempting to save Marge, but he is caught in the ride. Dwight jams the ride’s gears by throwing in his own body to save Wiggum. He survives, fortunately, and returns to prison after being hospitalized and making a full recovery. Back at the prison, Marge finally visits Dwight, who gives her a flattened dandelion encased in a bar of soap he had carved for her with a message on the back intending to recruit her in helping him attempt another prison break. Marge does not agree to the escape attempt and Dwight, although saddened, says she can keep the token.

Reception

The episode had 8.83 million people on its first run. Robert Canning of IGN throughtly enjoyed Buscemi’s appearance, who particularily enjoyed the scene where the fun house mirror ballooned Buscemi’s eyes to a “hilarious extreme”; he also felt Buscemi’s voice was the first guest voice of the year to have been used to its fullest potential. Despite the humour of the episode, he also stated the ending of the episode did indeed falter a bit at the end, and felt it couldn’t deliver as many laughs as everything that came before it. This episode was also one of two episodes he enjoyed this season, the other being “Midnight Towboy”[2]

Cultural references

    * The title of this episode is a play on the title of the 1969 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
* The bank robbery is a parody of Dog Day Afternoon. Dwight’s partner has the same long but receding hairstyle that John Cazale wore in that movie.
* When Dwight crawls though the prison sewage pipe, this is a parody of Shawshank Redemption, where the main character in that film gains freedom from prison by crawling through a dirty sewage and waste pipe.
* The song featured when Dwight stalks Marge is “Who Can It Be Now?” by Men at Work.
* When Marge and Dwight are at the amusement park you can see the ride “Dilbert’s Flying Cubicle” in the background, a reference to Scott Adams’s popular comic Dilbert. The theme song of the Dilbert animated series, “Forbidden Zone”, can be heard in the background for a large portion of the remaining scene. A character in the previous episode Please Homer Don’t Hammer ‘Em appeared wearing a shirt reading Dilbert’s Flying Cubicle.
* The Itchy & Scratchy episode “The Un-Natural” parodies the baseball steroids scandal. The title references the book and movie The Natural.
* Chief Wiggum watched The Negotiator on a portable DVD player to learn how to deal with a hostage situation. He mentions several plot points to the movie as he is calling out the chapter titles. He also mentions that the lead characters names are Danny Roman and Chris Sabian.

“Midnight Towboy” is the third episode of The Simpsons’ nineteenth season. Guest starring Matt Dillon as Louie.

Plot

The episode begins with Marge putting Maggie to bed, however Maggie refuses to leave Marge’s arms. After Maggie’s attachment towards Marge causes a jar of milk to be spilled, Marge (with difficulty) attempts to email “C.R.I.E” (Creative Responses for Independent Edu-loving), a group which enables attached children to be more independent.

Meanwhile, Homer finds out the Kwik-E-Mart does not have any more milk, so he takes a trip past Shelbyville and Ogdenville to Guidopolis, a sleazy-looking town where everyone speaks with a New Jersey accent. He goes to the “Mook-E-Mart”, and purchases milk and ends up having his car towed by a man named Louie. Louie shows Homer the joy of towing cars for a living, and will agree to help Homer become a successful tow truck driver if, and only if Homer would “stay off [his] turf”. Homer then becomes Springfield’s tow truck driver.

At home, a woman dressed in attire similar to those of a hippie arrives to help Marge with Maggie’s independence. After the woman orders Marge to leave Maggie alone in the room, Maggie’s cry makes Marge desperate to hug Maggie; however the woman explains that “hugs are drugs, and [Maggie] is addicted”. After rushing to the living room, she finds Maggie is happily building her own blocks, which spells “I’m OK”. Later, a more independent Maggie climbs on a table leg in the kitchen, picks up a book and banana and seats herself in her high-chair, much to Marge’s sad disappointment that she’s no longer needed.

Homer then becomes a successful tow truck driver, going even as far as to tow down Arnie Pie’s helicopter. After a brief celebration at Moe’s, he then tows Lenny’s car, Principal Skinner’s car, as well as the Sunday School bus, causing Ned to sardonically call Homer, “Towmer”. The residents of Springfield begin getting frustrated with Homer’s continuing tow-antics, so they plan a revenge upon him. They put a car in Guidopolis (however, they cover the city limits sign with one saying “You’re still in Springfield”) beside a fire hydrant. They then spray on a handicap parking only logo near the car’s parking spot and stuff multiple tickets under the windshield wipers, with the intention of luring Homer to Guidopolis.

At home, Maggie clips her own toenails with a pair of scissors, clips a wad of her hair out, and makes her very own “baby book”. After seeing her more independent, Marge begins to miss her, so she bonds with a sack of potatoes. At Guidopolis, Homer becomes abducted by Louie who keeps him in a traphole in his basement with other tow truck drivers who trespassed his area, where he bonds with them.

Homer’s absence causes parking pandemonium. Lenny and Carl park in the handicap area, Agnes Skinner parks sideways, Rainier Wolfcastle parks his truck on top of her, Duffman lowered his blimp down, the Sea Captain brings his ship on the sidewalk, and a train truck driver crashes through it all. Marge worries about Homer, who had not returned home for four days. Maggie, worried for her father and mother’s happiness uses her newfound independent abilities to save Homer by riding on Santa’s Little Helper through the night to Guidopolis. A humble Maggie rescues Homer from the cellar, and returns home with Homer. After giving the sack of potatoes a punch, Maggie gives Marge her pacifier and hugs Marge, reuniting with her.

Cultural references

    * Ned uses a quote made famous from Spiderman “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
* The episode title is a reference to the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy.
* When Homer is seen singing Shout! while dressed in a toga, riding a motorbike down the stairs, it is a reference to Animal House, possibly extending to repeat useage of “Under the Boardwalk”, by The Drifters.
* When Homer cries, it is a reference to the phrase, don’t cry over spilled milk.
* Guidopolis is a referece to an Italian American life style called Guido
* While in captivity, Homer enthralls the kidnapped drivers by describing summer 2007 relates Transformers and Shrek The Third. The mention of these films was actually good foresight by the show, as this episode was filmed long before the summer 2007 movie season officially began, and presumably was based on a combination of general speculation about the films and common knowledge (for example, Homer describes how Shrek has a modern speaking style although the film’s are set in medieval times).

Soundtrack

    * The song played when Homer drives into Guidopolis is “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, which was featured on the soundtrack of the 1983 movie Eddie and the Cruisers.
* The song played when Homer is being driven by Louie is “Cochise” by Audioslave.
* The song played when Homer is trapped in Louie’s basement with the other captives is “Under the Boardwalk”, by The Drifters.

“The Homer of Seville” is the second episode of The Simpsons’ nineteenth season and first aired on September 30, 2007. It was written by Carolyn Omine, directed by Michael Polcino and guest starred Plácido Domingo as himself and Maya Rudolph as Julia.
Personally, I did not like this episode for the plenty full singing in it.

Plot

The episode starts with the Simpsons family escaping Church. Marge decides she wants to eat out instead of cooking for herself as usual. After finding out every place has lines, Marge goes as far as to break into someone’s apparent party. It does not take long for them to realize that they crashed a funeral. Homer volunteers to be a pallbearer, filling in for a man who has twisted his ankle. After falling into an open grave, Homer is sent to the hospital.

While at the hospital, Homer finds out his usual “D’oh” did not sound as right as usual. While causing the bed to sit upright, and lay flat, Dr. Hibbert notices Homer’s diaphragm is safely under his stomach when he is lying down, giving him the ability to sing in an operatic voice that causes new born babies to cease crying and weak patients to feel strong.

While shopping for organs, Mr. Burns overhears Homer and immediately hires him to sing the lead in his production of La bohème. Homer wows the crowd at the Springfield Opera House. Homer becomes an enormous celebrity who consistently receives attention from older aged women. While running from a mob of his crazed fans, Homer is saved by a person on a motorcycle he assumes is a man, however at the home “he” is revealed to be a “she”, named Julia. When Marge goes into the kitchen to bring tea, Julia slowly removes her clothes for Homer, and threatens Homer that she will tell Marge Homer attacked her if he tells. Over the next few days, she keeps appearing in sexually suggestive positions. Homer, soon enraged, fires her.

Next morning, Homer is nearly bitten by a poisonous cobra, and Lisa worries someone is trying to kill Homer. At Homer’s next performance, Chief Wiggum goes to general measures, none of which are useful. Julia arrives to shoot Homer with a poisonous blowdart. While Marge saves Homer, the shot fires through a French Horn and back into Julia’s neck. Every sniper in the opera house starts shooting at Julia, although all but one miss. She is taken to the hospital, vowing revenge on Marge. Homer gives up opera to work on his new passion: painting.

Cultural references

    * The title is a reference to The Barber of Seville.
* Lisa claims that tenor Andrea Bocelli recorded an entire song on his back. Bocelli apparently did record one track on his Amore album on his back, and demonstrated this technique on an episode of American Idol in 2006.[3]
* The Springfield Opera House is shaped like the Sydney Opera House.
* The scene of Lenny and Carl watching Homer’s opera performance from the rafters is a reference to a similar scene in Citizen Kane.
* Homer’s entourage, Lenny and Carl, is a parody of the HBO series Entourage. The music when Lenny (who dresses like Turtle) and Carl are in the limousine is the show’s theme song.
* The orchestral sequence featured in the Cobra scene is the overture of Mozart’s opera, Don Giovanni.
* When Carl and Lenny are sent away from the table at the Guilded Truffle, Carl mutters “Yoko”, at Marge. It is a reference to Yoko “breaking up The Beatles”, but in this case Marge is breaking up the entourage.
* Homer paints a parody of Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam on the ceiling.
* The motorcyle Julia rides is a reference to Street Hawk, an 80′s TV show about a Knight Rider-like motorcycle.
* Lisa mentions an upcoming Father-Daughter dance in this episode. In I Don’t Wanna Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which aired two weeks later, the dance is flashed back to, having apparentally occurred inbetween these two episodes.
* It is confirmed Julia will return, a popular hint states to team up with Sideshow bob in Funeral for a Fiend or another one.
