On December 11th, 2007 Matt (or whoever he employs to run the WordPress Themeviewer) announced that updates are in progress. The short news post goes on by stating that “they were sorry for the lack of updates and that a subversion system would be installed and tested at the moment”.

Questions over questions… I find it really sad that the Themeviewer has been closed to Updates for such a long time.
I have fixed my Rainbow Feather Theme in August 2007 already and still people get the old version from the Themeviewer. I manually contact every single Rainbow Feather user and tell them to get the fixed version which takes care of the Internet Explorer 6 png-transparency issue. Also it is now valid xhtml and css, a good feature that many themes lack!

If the people at the official Themeviewer need help, why not address to the always helping community?
There are so many bright heads out there that fix WordPress bugs everyday without any pay – people developing plugins, people posting news and so on. Still, the Themeviewer is closed down. If you were to ask for help, I would volunteer and I am sure some 100 other people would, too! You can discuss this matter in the official WordPress Support forums

Obviously, some changes are being made: for instance was the theme download counter reset – but not for all I believe. This is weird and I hope Matt can shed some light onto this change. Personally, I have had some 50,000+ downloads in the past 6 months for my WordPress Themes (that look different) – these 50,000 downloads is in so far realistic, when looking at my Technorati Authority and Rank (26,000+ reactions, 390th ranked website) – so this leaves me stumbling, why are some counts reset and others not.
Or were all themes reset and my themes are simply not that well demanded nowadays? Another possibility of course… I must admit!

if you update wordpress you can also get categories in the bottom right corner (the new function is wordpress 2.3 only I guess)

yours,
jez

p.s. also if you dont have posts in the yellow area:
check the single.php or page.php or whatever file and look out for

a function at the top saying something like ?cat=5

this outputs the posts from category 5.
you have to change that to a category which you have.
check the wordpress admin “manage” -> categories and see the id of the category you want shown there.
hope that helps!

Trying out the bleeding edge version of WordPress 2.4. shows that the Popularity Contest plugin by Alex King does currently not work. It renders a “fatal error” on the plugin page and resists to get activated.

Happy New Year everyone, I have some interesting news for you guys -
I just received an email from a Dane asking for permission to translate my Rainbow Feather WordPress Theme to Danish -
Funny he mentions the localization issue right now, as I am also working on Brazilian translations for all my WordPress themes. I have been getting plenty of kudos and acknowledgements in regard to the feather theme every week – thank you for that!

Due to an exam that is coming up at 11th January I have to pause my work at the moment – I have finished translating 8 themes so far (it is really a lot of work)

Regarding his question, I hope it is not too bold of me to ask everyone to hang on until the 14th of January for me to send/upload the files.
When I do stuff, I do it right – I want to offer the PSD files (that I was hogging till now) to everyone who wants to translate my work.

I really appreciate every effort and thank you a lot. Happy new year!

Hey everyone, just 14 hours ago another essential WordPress Security Update was announced. It should patch your wordpress copy to version 2.3.2 – if you have setup WordPress using Subversion you can either run

svn up

from ssh using PuTTY or (somehow this did not work for me) you can try

svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.3.2/

happy updating (takes around 5 seconds actually).

Maybe another quick update from my side: I have finished translating the first eight (8) themes from English into Portuguese – they will be released once I have cleared all formalities with Samba!
The themes come updated in English, Portuguese and in a “branded” Samba! version. So you have three packages to choose from, but I doubt you are interested in a Samba! branded version if you can get the clutter-free English or Portuguese one.

Anyway, have a great New Year’s Eve in case I do not post anything else this year any more.

There are quite some obstacles that have to be overcome when translating / localizing themes or files in general to another language. For instance, not all alphabets are the same and encoded in the same way: the Brazilians have all those ~ above and underneath their letters:Ç for instance has to be translated to the html equivalent of ascii code

& #199; or the easier to remember & Ccedil;

– it is the Latin capital letter C with cedilla who wouldn’t have guessed?!

Anyhow, with work for my mini-company at university stashing up I had little time so far – next exam is coming up at 11th January, so I will kick-start the translations with full-speed. While translating all my themes from English to Portuguese (Brazilian) I will fix numerous bugs and take out some items that people have complained about.

For instance, with the Dragee theme, I have added the “pages” tab- now pages are displayed on all sites (no idea why I did not do that earlier) – also the icons are grouped in one instance and carry one link now only.

Look at the below thumbnails and click them for some additional information.

Oh, also just realized when putting in the Tags for this post that I could add tag support maybe for all my themes!

Samba!

In connection with Samba BR I am working on Portuguese translations for all my themes.
Also, I got five new themes for WordPress stashed. I will also release widgetized updates of past themes and bug fix a few minor things in the coming days. Please stay tuned. I hope the WordPress Themeviewer will also be “ready on time”. Cannot wait to update my old themes to reflect the new changes.

I am currently working in connection with Samba BR to release Portuguese translations of all my themes. In addition, new themes will be released, both in English and Portuguese. If you have other language translation requests, please let me know.

The themeviewer announced on December 11th that work is being done at the moment: they are trying to establish a SVN-like system for themes (as they have for plugins within days) right now. I will keep you posted with more wordpress news!

Matt writes: (quote)
“Just wanted to do a quick update for those wondering when you’ll be able to add new themes or update existing ones here in the directory. We’ve been working very hard on a new Subversion-backed database for themes that will allow you to upload themes as you did before, as a plain ZIP file, and we’re transparently check it into SVN so changes can be tracked just like we do for WordPress development.

There will also be moderation and review so that we can scan themes for XSS problems, malicious code, spam links, and other ways that people have been distributing malware themes. I’m sorry this has taken longer than I thought it would, but the problems involved with doing things “right” are non-trivial. Most importantly we want to ensure that once the re-launch is done you’ll have easy, fast, and stable access to the best and brightest in the theme world, and you’ll never have to think twice about the code you’re downloading.”
